Thanks for posting this. I have visited to this location and like you, found several things to be a good deal. I wrote about my experience here: http://savingingreenville.com/2008/10/07/spotlight-on-savings-bargain-food-store/. Thanks for the contact information, though I don't believe the website is currently linked to the actual store.

Are any of you familiar with Bargain Foods in Pelzer? It is 20 minutes or so from Greenville, and it is worth a trip if you are interested. It is an overstocks kind of place, so you have to watch some dates and dents in cans, etc. They often have Tropicana OJ for $1.34. You can sometimes even get a gallon for $2. Not everything is a rock-bottom price kind of deal, but it is worth it. I was able to get chicken broth for 24 cents a can. You cannot go with a detailed grocery list and expect to find it all there, but it is a great place for stock piling. Of course you cannot use coupons, but the deals are better than normal coupon deals for a lot of things. Here is the information:

Bargain's, Inc (Bargain Foods)
349 Highway 8 E, Pelzer, SC 29669-9729
Contact Phone: (864) 947-5115

This site is helpful in gathering information about different specials at stores along with coupons. It is similar to thegrocerygame.com, only it is free. I am not sure if you all have already discussed it, but I thought it would fit the blog.

Cbrown on "Rebates and ECBs"

Liz, I'll just share my opinion. I used to shop at Aldi primarily and supplement with generic brands. I'd also try to trim down my grocery list to basic ingredients and go without more expensive items. But I've found that using ECBs at CVS have allowed me to significantly cut down my grocery bill. I started CVSing last May, and I've built a fairly large stockpile of toiletries, make-up, and household products without spending much money out of pocket. I used to feel frustrated when we ran out of common items like toothpaste and shampoo, because that was one more item to add to the list for Wal-Mart. Now I just pull out of the closet another tube of toothpaste or bottle of shampoo that I got for free at CVS. Not having to spend much (if any) money on toiletries, make-up, cleaning supplies, etc. has been one (of many) strategies that has helped me lower my grocery budget from $35-40 per week down to a $20/week for two people. I've also been able to give away items I've gotten for free at CVS to others in need.

Now, I know that spending the time figuring out deals isn't for everyone. Because I'm also teaching and in school, I just stick to CVS and let the deals at Walgreens and RiteAid go. It's just my husband and me, and we live in a small apartment, so we can't go overboard with the amount of free stuff we keep around. It's also good to take a break sometimes--you don't need every deal.

I think that everyone has to evaluate the time and money available and find the balance that uses both resources wisely. It's easy to spend too much time putting together deals and filling out rebates for stuff you don't really need. But using those ECBs and rebates can be a great way to make your budgeted grocery money stretch further.

That's my experience--hope it helps!

I was wondering if anyone has suggestions when using rebates-like at walgreens? Or using the ECBs at CVS. It is worth all the work? I like to use coupons and match up sales, but am wondering if I am missing out on a whole lot of savings by not taking advatage of rebates and such. They look like a lot of work. My question is really this: Would it be better to just buy the generic brand (or go without) then to fill out all these forms?? Just curious:)

Thanks! This is helpful. I didn't realize that Bloom marked down their milk. Do they put a sticker on the milk indicating that it's marked down, or do you just have to look for dates that are soon to expire? Also, how much do they usually mark it down to?

I've gotten milk half off at CVS by checking dates and that has been the best deal yet because it usually rings up to about $1.50.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding adding water to the milk. That would work great for my husband and I! Although, I'm wondering if the milk would be nutritious enough for my 19 month old son (who drinks the bulk of the milk) if I diluted it with water? I'm guessing it depends on how much you dilute it. I've heard of some people diluting it up to half (half milk, half water), which I'm not sure I'd do b/c half the nutrients, calories and fats are gone (unlike skim, which still retains all of the nutrients).

Right now we've been using a free $25 gift card at Sam's (our membership was a Christmas Gift as well!) to buy whole milk ($2.99). After that, I'm not sure what I'm going to do! :)

Bloom sometimes has it on markdown when it is nearing expiration. Also, if you can, buy whole milk and then add a little water to it--this makes it like skim or 2%.

Kmart on Church St. is participating in the doubles sale again until Oct 18 (up to $2 coupons), but they're being more difficult about it. No overage and no doubling coupons that would provide overage. Here are a few good deals though...

Whiskas multipak cat food - $4. Use $2 coupon = FREE
Glade 4 oz candles - $2. Use $1 coupon = FREE
Glade Carpet Cleaner - $2.19. Use $1 coupon = .19
Sure Deodorant - $2.29. Use $1 coupon = .29
Gillette Shampoo - 4.xx. Use $2 coupon = less than a dollar. I don't remember exact price.

Overall, my total was $83 and I spent $17 OOP.

Did everyone see that Ingles has split chicken breast on sale for $0.98 per lb.? This is a REALLY good price on chicken. I bought 5 pks today. My OOP was $19.29 for
19.68 lbs of chicken. Regular price would have been $44.87. This is about a 55% savings.

Sav a Ton (near Hamricks in Berea) is supposed to have some pretty good deals.

I love the idea of posting lowest prices on staples. Maybe there could be a thread for just that where eveyone could post their prices? Then after you get several prices you could compile a master list. Kind of like Hot Coupon World does when a store has a special sale and the readers post their deals. They put them in a master post and it's updated as folks find more deals.

Maybe you could post what the price is at the stores in the area.
Like GROUND BEEF: Publix $.$$; BI LO $.$$; Ingles $.$$; WalMart $.$$ Then if a real deal comes along you could put up a special notice.

(Speaking of ground beef....lots of times when Ingles but it on sale, Sav Mor does too but at a lower price. Last time, Ingles had it for $1.78/lb and Sav Mor was $1.58/lb.)

Of course, this would take place after you get the prices from your readers. I think we'd all be glad to help eachother find the lowest possible prices on items

Yard Sales: Maybe there could be a page or a thread for those? As folks know of a good one coming up or if they are having one (we are this weekend, close to Half Mile Lake, too. Need any gread kids toys for Christmas? My 2 year old is selling his little kid toys!) They could post where, when and the main items being sold.

Those "unknown" deals sound super too! I'd love to find some great deals on local produce.

Ashlyn and Cbrown: Thanks so much for your super ideas! Actually, I am planning to do a series of "Savings Spotlights" which will highlight deals like the bargain bread store. :) Stay tuned for later this week.

As far as the list of staple food prices and trading leftovers, I think for now the best way will be a forum. But I'll see what I can look into! :)

Keep the suggestions coming!

I like the idea of sharing the best prices for staples.

I don't know if this idea would be too complicated, but I know that sometimes I have an excess of one or two ingredients from Sav-Mor or great sales. Since many readers will be local, I wonder if it would be possible to have a place to post things we would like to give away or trade for things that others may have in excess. Again, that concept might be overly cumbersome, but I'd thought I'd share the thought.

Also, I'd love to go to more garage sales in the area, but I haven't come up with a good way to find out what neighborhoods are good ones to visit or how to find out about upcoming sales without just looking for signs as I'm out. Any tips on upcoming garage sales (especially neighborhood sales, etc.) would be great as well!

I liked the post about the good clearance sales for clothing!

Oh, another thought would be to have a page (or something), that would allow readers to contribute prices on food items that they've found around town so that we can compare prices and find the best deals (I often find something for a good price, then hear from someone else later that they found it for a better price somewhere else in town). It'd probably work the best if the prices posted are when items are not on sale, or else we'd all be posting about sales.

I guess you could do this on major food items like, chicken, ground beef, cheese, milk, flour, potatoes, veggies, apples, bananas, etc.

I'd like to hear about some of the more "unknown" places, like that bread place you posted about.

I would also like to hear about deals for more healthy foods, like organic foods (for example: the BJU Cleaners sell organic meat (as in, hormone-free, etc.) for a good price, the Farmer's Market sells Happy Cow milk, but Whole Foods actually has a better price, etc.), as well as about local farms where we can pick produce (if this is cheaper than the grocery stores).

Anyways - those are my two cents! Thanks so much for this blog!

Thanks for the input, bignlittlesmom! For grocery deals, would you prefer to see big lists of coupon match-ups, or just small lists of the free, near free, and super good deals?

I'll definitely plan to share freebies in the area! :)
